The axe on the handle is a subtle homage to Paul Bunyan, the giant lumberjack from American folklore. And the words "Land of 10,000 Rinks" are repeatedly engraved on the bottom. This is the state's nickname, derived from its culture of enjoying hockey on its countless lakes and outdoor rinks during the winter.
